Dozens of Israeli Jews on Wednesday entered the courtyards of al-Aqsa Mosque under heavy protection of Israeli forces which prevented Palestinian worshipers from accessing the mosque for prayer.

Police also denied Knesset member Moshe Feiglin access to the compound. Feiglin on Tuesday called upon Israelis to head to the al-Aqsa compound on the occasion of the Jewish Passover festival.

According to Sheikh Azzam al-Khatib, 112 Israeli settlers entered the courtyards of al-Aqsa at 7:30 a.m. via the Moroccan Gate. He pointed out that large numbers of Israeli police officers deployed in the compound.

The Qatari emir made the proposal during his opening speech and offered to contribute $250 million to the fund, without providing further details.

He also suggested an Arab summit in Cairo to implement Palestinian reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas.

he welcomed the reconciliation proposal by the emir, while Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh issued a statement also welcoming the initiative.

Taking Syria's seat at an Arab summit for the first time, opposition leader Moaz Alkhatib said he had asked US Secretary of State John Kerry for US forces to help defend rebel-controlled northern parts of Syria with Patriot surface-to-air missiles.

Forty percent of Palestinians are clinically depressed, a rate unmatched anywhere in the word. It’s more than triple that of the U.S., ten times higher than in the U.K., and four to eight times higher than in Scandinavia, where the sun doesn't shine for a good part of the year.

GAZA CITY

-- Israeli authorities kept the Kerem Shalom crossing closed for a fifth day today, after imposing a closure last week following rocket fire from Gaza.

Israel closed the Gaza commercial crossing on Thursday after a rocket was fired at southern Israel and reduced the fishing zone around Gaza from 6 to 3 miles.

The zone had been extended to 11 km as part of an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire that ended an eight-day conflict between Israel and Hamas in November, in which 166 Palestinians and six Israelis were killed.

 Dear Barack Obama,
Just because Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated by an "extremist Jew" does NOT make him Martin Luther King! You dishonor Dr. Kings name and legacy by associating a murderous war criminal like Rabin with Dr. King! It appears, if you and your Zionist handlers have your way, it won't be long before Rabin is Beatified in Rome!

GAZA CITY

-- Gaza-based premier Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas said today he did not expect US President Barack Obama's visit to change the situation for Palestinians.

"We believe American policies perpetuate the Israeli occupation and settlements in Palestine under the slogan of peace," Haniyeh said

He added: "The PA must realize that they have to abide by national principles and reconciliation."

Referring to Obama's remarks a day earlier during a news conference with Israel's prime minister about Iran's threats, Haniyeh said Iran was not an enemy to Arabs despite certain differences.

US PRESIDENT BARAK OBAMA IN RAMMALLAH

US President Barack Obama today downplayed continued Israeli settlement building as an obstacle to the peace process, and he called on the Palestinians to resume talks.

In a joint news conference in Ramallah, Obama said both sides should overcome their respective concerns about one another's commitment to the peace process.

"That's not to say settlements aren't important, that's to say if we resolve the (main) problems, then settlements will be resolved," Obama said, referring to the Palestinians' refusal to negotiate while Israel continues to build on Palestinian land.

"If to begin the conversation we have to get everything right from the outset ... then we're never going to get to the broader issue, which is how do you structure a state of Palestine," Obama said.

President Mahmoud Abbas, speaking directly after Obama, responded defiantly that the Palestinian position on settlements had not changed.

"It isn't just our perception that settlements are illegal. It is a global perspective. Everybody views settlements not only as a hurdle, but more than a hurdle to a two-state solution," he said.

"We are asking for nothing outside the international legitimacy. It is the responsibility of the Israeli government to halt settlement activities so we can at least speak."

He added: "We hope that the Israeli government understands this. We hope they listen to the many opinions inside Israel itself speaking of the illegality of settlements."

Neither side directly referenced a report in The New York Times on Thursday suggesting Abbas would ask Obama for help securing an unannounced settlement freeze from Israel's prime minister.

But Abbas said that during his meeting with Obama, "We spoke about (settlements) with Mr President (Obama) and we clarified our point of view about how we can reach a solution."
